What are some of the different types of headaches?
All headaches are not created equal and understanding what type of headache is affecting a patient is the first step in finding lasting relief. The most common type of headache is known as a tension headache. Tension headaches are characterized by a constant dull, aching pain or feeling of pressure, often felt at the temples or the back portion of the head. While they are uncomfortable and affect quality of life, tension headaches aren’t typically debilitating. Cluster headaches create sudden and severe pain that is typically experienced on one side of the head and sufferers sometimes feel restless when a cluster headache strikes. They usually occur in a “cluster” or cycle. Sinus headaches are experienced in the front of the face and head and can cause pain and swelling. Sinus headaches are often accompanied by drainage from the nose and down the throat. Migraine headaches are among the most debilitating types of head pain. Migraines can cause a severe throbbing or pulsating pain and often interfere with the course of normal activity. In some cases, patients experience nausea and/or vomiting, while others report heightened sensitivity to visual and auditory stimuli during the course of a migraine headache.
What causes migraines and other types of headaches?
Different types of headaches have different causes. The cause of migraines isn’t fully understood, but many factors have been identified such as certain foods and beverages, food additives, stress, hormonal changes in women, environmental factors and medications. Migraine sufferers are often able to identify and avoid certain environmental triggers found to cause their headaches. Like migraines, the cause of tension headaches isn’t known, but stress and muscle tension in the neck and scalp are often found in people who suffer from tension headaches. The exact cause of cluster headaches isn’t known either. Cluster headache patterns suggest that abnormalities in the body’s biological clock play a role. Alcohol and medications have been found to trigger cluster headaches. Sinus headaches are often caused by sinus infections.
What treatment options are available for headaches in a chiropractic setting?
Research has shown that spinal adjustments can be very effective in treating headaches, especially those that originate in the area of the neck. Chiropractic care can help patients find relief from tension and migraine headaches through the targeted adjustment of certain cervical vertebrae. Some headaches are caused by poor posture and chronic strain in the upper back and neck. In such cases, chiropractic care can make great strides in reducing headaches.
Trigger point work can also be used to relax tight muscles and reduce trigger points that may be contributing to headache pain. No matter what type of headache leads a patient to us, our team will do whatever we can to help. In addition to spinal adjustments and muscle work, we can provide education in general wellness practices, such as dietary recommendations and advice on environmental irritants to avoid.
