Back Pain Q & A

Mesa Chiropractic Rehab and Wellness

What are the most common causes of back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care and it can result from a number of different issues. Some of the most common causes of back pain include:

  • Poor posture
  • Misalignment of the vertebrae
  • Disc problems (disc herniation, bulging disc, decreased disc space, etc.)
  • Arthritis
  • Traumas (sports injuries, auto accidents, slip and fall accidents, etc.)
  • Sitting too much
  • Improper lifting techniques
  • Spine related diseases (scoliosis, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, etc.)

When patients experience back pain, that pain can sometimes be felt in nearby areas of the body, including the buttocks and hip. This can be due to “radiating” pain or “referred” pain and is often caused by disc problems in the spine.

What is a spinal adjustment and how can it assist with back pain?

The spinal adjustment is probably the chiropractic treatment that most people are familiar with. Using their hands, or at times a small instrument, the doctor of chiropractic applies a quick, gentle force to the vertebrae to restore proper motion and alignment in the joints and improve nervous system function. This helps the body’s natural ability to heal itself. One of the major benefits of spinal adjustments is the relief of pain without the need for drugs or surgery.

What other chiropractic care techniques are used to treat back pain?

We use a number of other approaches to address back pain in our practice as well, such as our Ceragem V3 massage tables which can help relax muscles and promote increased circulation. Electrical muscle stimulation may also be used to manage back pain. Some other options we utilize are decompression, home exercises, Precor stretch trainers, Therapeutic Wobble Chairs, Vibration platforms and Denneroll traction devices. Every patient goes through a thorough exam process to determine which options will work best based on their individual needs.
